Jefferson Graduate Nursing Program Named Among Top Online Education Programs

Jefferson School of Nursing (JSN) of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a Top Online Education Program for its Graduate Programs in Nursing.

JSN is ranked in three categories: Teaching Practices and Student Engagement; Student Services and Technology; and Faculty Credentials and Training.

Michael J. Vergare, MD, Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University, says, “Jefferson School of Nursing has 120 years of excellence in teaching nursing. This national recognition reflects the School’s efforts to maintain a high level of standards as we create online programs.”

JSN offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree completely online. Students from across the country complete the Master of Science in Nursing program both synchronously and asynchronously online.

Anthony Frisby, director of Education Services for Jefferson’s Academic and Instructional Support and Resources (AISR), says that Nursing was the first Jefferson program to offer a completely online course. “When ‘Epidemiology for Advance Practice Nursing’ debuted online in 1998, it received several awards and was widely cited as a model for others to follow. Since then, JSN has continued to explore new instructional technologies and evaluate their impact on student achievement and satisfaction with preparation for the clinical environment.”

Frisby notes JSN’s newest use of technology: the integration of the iPad2 into the curriculum of the 12-month FACT program in 2011. JSN faculty worked with AISR instructional designers to develop ways to include the iPad2 in classroom activities, simulation labs and as a clinical reference tool.
