Jefferson Participated In Inaugural Camp Cardiac Philadelphia
Thomas Jefferson University’s Jefferson School of Nursing participated in the first Camp Cardiac-Philadelphia, a camp that introduces interested high school students to careers in the health industry. The one-week day camp took place from August 6 – 10, 2012. Jefferson School of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Susan Shirato acted as a faculty volunteer, working with a panel of medical professionals to introduce nearly 200 high school students to healthcare professions.
“It was my intent to help the students to understand that a physician/nurse collaboration is working as part of a team of professionals,” said Shirato. “Respect for each other as professionals is extremely important for patient continuity of care.”
Camp Cardiac emphasizes both education and real world experience, with a primary focus on heart maintenance. As a non-profit organization, Camp Cardiac awards full and partial scholarships to underprivileged students. The program is hosted in multiple cities in the United States, including Boston, Chicago, New York, and Washington, DC.
