Personal Safety

All Emergencies--Dial 811 on Campus The Security Department is open every day, 24 hours a day. Report any suspicious activity to security. For more information about personal safety visit the following links:

For additional information on personal and campus safety, please contact William Thygeson, Chairman of the University Safety Committee.

Crimes against persons, such as robbery, assault, and sexual assault, are a particular concern of the College. Here are some basic precautions:

  • Think ahead - be prepared. A crime can occur any time.
  • Be alert and walk purposely. Confidence deters attackers.
  • Carry a personal alarm, or be prepared to scream loudly if attacked.
  • Take a self-defense course! Contact William Thygeson listed above!
  • If you choose to walk, do so with others, along well-lighted, well-traveled routes and streets.
  • If someone follows you, change direction and go to a place where there are other people.
  • When socializing, don't drink too much - keeping a clear head makes it easier to make wise decisions when it comes to personal safety.
  • Learn the locations of the emergency blue light telephones which are placed throughout campus. (See the map below.) Do not hesitate to use them to summon a campus safety Officer.
