Mission & Philosophy

Our Mission

The mission of the Jefferson Physician Assistant Program is to provide students with the foundation of knowledge, technical skills and critical thinking necessary to competently perform the functions of the physician assistant profession in an ethical, empathetic manner working with a licensed practicing physician. A secondary focus is to prepare students to provide comprehensive medical services to diverse under-served patient populations in inner-city and rural locations.

Educational Philosophy

In order to accomplish our mission, we strive to offer our students a program comprised of well sequenced, high-quality didactic courses and clinical experiences designed to develop outstanding clinical practitioners to function in the complex health care environment of the present and future. Our educational philosophy stresses the practical application of current medical science, a humanistic orientation to patient care, and a respect for life-long learning.

To obtain our secondary mission, we place students in a variety of medically underserved clinical locations in the urban Philadelphia area, as well as sites in New Jersey in Camden, Atlantic County, and Trenton.  Additionally, students may have the opportunity to do a rotation in rural Mississippi in a variety of medical specialties.  Mission trips are scheduled annually and 5th year students travel to Honduras with members of the faculty.   Several students have successfully applied to be a part of the NHSC.
