Program Options

Students have a variety of options for completing their Bachelor of Science and/or Master of Science in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science. Choose the option that is right for you.

Options for High School Seniors

Program Length

5 years

3 years of pre-professional coursework at the East Falls campus followed by 2 years of program-specific coursework at the Center City campus (full-time)

About the Program

High school seniors who are committed to earning a Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) complete three years of pre-professional coursework at the East Falls campus. Students who interview and maintain progression criteria are guaranteed to matriculate into the professional phase at the Center City campus. Jefferson’s academic advisors and faculty work closely with our students on course selection and academic progression to ensure that each student is on pace to transition into the professional phase of the program.

After successful completion of the program, students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science.

Options for College Students

Program Length

55 credits of specific prerequisite coursework
2 academic years (full-time)

About the Program

This is the traditional track for students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science. Students enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing prerequisite coursework at another school.

70 credits of specific prerequisite coursework
1 year (12 consecutive months, full-time)

About the Program

Students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science can enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing prerequisite coursework at another school.

The 1-Year Option allows students with 70 credits of specific prerequisite coursework to earn a BS in one calendar year of full-time study.

2 academic years (full-time)

About the Program

Students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science can enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing 82 credits of prerequisite coursework at another school.

The Combined BS/MS option allows students with 82 credits of specific prerequisite coursework to earn a BS and MS in two calendar years of full-time study.

Program Length

Accelerated: 12 consecutive months of full-time study, including summer sessions

About the Program

This one-of-a-kind program offers specific technical and managerial competencies for employment in biotech, clinical and/or anatomic pathology laboratories. The program is designed for students who:

  • Have a BS in a field other than biotechnology, cytotechnology and cell sciences, or medical laboratory science
  • Have a BS in one laboratory science program, but want to study another practice area

This program is a good fit for those who plan to apply to medical or other doctoral programs and want to gain additional academic and practical experience. Students gradaute with a Master of Science in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science.

Program Length

2 years: Take classes in the fall and spring semesters for two years, with no summer coursework

About the Program

Students seeking leadership positions in laboratory management, education and research can earn a Master of Science in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science, through either full- or part-time study. The program is tailored to each student's unique interests and professional goals.

Students must have a BS or a post-baccalaureate certificate in biotechnology, cytotechnology, or medical laboratory science/medical technology. Other laboratory professionals may be eligible based on training and experience.
