The Division of Cardiology offers diverse, educational programs to medical students, medical residents, cardiology fellows, and practicing physicians in a variety of settings, including Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited activities. The division administers competitive ACGME-accredited fellowship programs in general cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and heart failure.

Members of the Division of Cardiology actively participate in clinical research in all disciplines of cardiology under the auspices of the Jefferson Clinical Research Institute (JCRI). The JCRI is a clinical enterprise within the Division of Cardiology that develops, initiates and oversees clinical research funded by industry, nonprofit organizations, and the U.S. Government. In addition to the Division of Cardiology, the JCRI provides the infrastructure and personnel to clinical researchers within Thomas Jefferson University and the surrounding community, to facilitate clinical research.
 

About the Division of Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology at Thomas Jefferson University is home to 33 full-time physicians with expertise in patient care, education, and research. The division is a core component of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Service Line, combining cardiovascular disease with cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, vascular medicine, and interventional radiology, with a focus on the care of patients with heart and vascular disease. The Jefferson Heart Institute is the center of the division’s outpatient clinical practice, including patient testing, anticoagulation program, cardiovascular risk reduction program, and the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center. In addition to the Jefferson Heart Institute, the Division of Cardiology operates three outpatient satellite facilities and the newly opened Jefferson Angioplasty Center located in the University Hospital. The three satellite facilities are conveniently located in Northeast Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd, PA, and Voorhees, NJ.

In 2014, Division of Cardiology physicians performed more than 31,000 outpatient visits and cared for more than 2,200 patients admitted to the University Hospital for their cardiac care. The electrophysiology physicians oversee a growing remote monitoring program for patients with pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. The Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center physicians have collectively cared for more than 1,200 heart transplant patients and actively participate in the care of patients with congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathies, and ventricular assist devices.

Recently, the Jefferson Angioplasty Center opened in the University Hospital. This Center is designed to provide second opinions to patients with complex coronary or structural heart disease.
