What I love about Jefferson: The people! Having such a collaborative environment was amazing during residency, and the residents, faculty, and nursing staff are all very supportive. It is such a great community and having been here for medical school and residency, it feels like home.
Favorite things to do in Philly: Playing volleyball with multiple recreational groups including the Jefferson Volleyball Club and Philly Sports Leagues. Also, Restaurant Week: a bi-annual event where many of the city's best restaurants have fixed-priced lunch and dinner deals, so it's a great way to try out a variety of places! And to walk off my food coma: Wissahickon Valley Park with its hiking trails is a great place to get in some outdoor and more socially-distanced activity.
Sonia Bharel, MD
Hometown: New Hyde Park, NY
Medical School: Stony Brook University School of Medicine
Academic Interests: Medical Education, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, Resident Imposter Syndrome, Improving Health Access
What I love about Jefferson: Most importantly - the family I have formed through my co-residents and mentors. I am truly lucky to have found lifelong friends that have made residency a fun and collaborative experience. I could go on and on about how amazing the Jefferson community is; to sum it up, they made me laugh every day of residency. I also gained an incredibly strong clinical education while still being able to develop a true vision of my career aspriations. I feel that I grew as a person and as a professional the most during my time as a resident at Jefferson.
Favorite things to do in Philly: Though I was born in NY, Philly stole my heart. It is an incredible place with the perfect mix of a city-feel while still being 'approachable'. I spend a lot of time exploring different neighborhoods, trying new foods (the food scene is AMAZING), finding places to hike, and watching musicals/plays. I especially love how the city utillizes its outdoor space at all times of the year!
Navdeep Sangha, DO
Hometown: Abbotsford, British Columbia (Canada)
Medical School: Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine
Academic Interests: Cardiovascular risk in non-type O blood, Heme/Onc, and Medical Education at both the UME and GME level.
What I love about Jefferson: The people. As a Canadian, I am the foremost expert in the field of Niceness, and in my expert opinion Jefferson cultivates an environment of unmatched Niceness. As an academic institution it has all of the trappings one would expect with all-star faculty, incredible research and highly dedicated staff; however, I would challenge anyone to try and find an institution with a more collegial, warm and collaborative environment than Jefferson. I think this is no more clearly manifested in the fact that our residents come from all over the country and have very diverse backgrounds, and somehow create a second home here at Jeff. I have made some of my closest friends and have fostered lifelong relationships as a resident here and I do not stand alone. I have treasured my time here and do not lighly say I love my co-residents, my program, and this institution.
Favorite things to do in Philly: I can watch Ice Hockey with the best of 'em. I am also the foremost (and only) expert in the field of Pizzology. I obtained my degree from the College of Eating and am board certified in Sauce. The food scene here has allowed me to practice my craft at the highest level. I must say I have found my time here quite ful-Philly-ing.
Nicholas Young, MD
Hometown: Edgewater Park, NJ
Medical School: Cooper Medical School of Rowan University
Academic Interests: Medical Education, Clinical Reasoning, Adult Learning Theory
What I love about Jefferson: I really love the collegial and academic environment that Jefferson provides. My co-residents have been some of the kindest, most diligent and reliable people I have ever encountered both as clinicians and as friends. It has been an honor to work beside them as a resident and now to help continue advancing the program as chief-resident.
Favorite things to do in Philly: I have been getting more and more into golf lately and fortunately there's a surplus of good golf course that are close to the city. I love catching some stand-up comedy as well on the weekends.
