Academic Interests: GI/Hepatology, Quality Improvement, Adminstration, Resilience, Burnout in Healthcare Workers, and Medical Education
What I love about Jefferson: The People! One thing I remembered most when I interviewed at Jefferson was how well the residents got along and the genuine friendships they formed. When choosing a residency, I was looking for a training program that was both competitive but also provided a sense of community. Jefferson is exactly that, and it is the people I work alongside who make this program so special. In addition to the people, Jefferson's location is hard to beat. Philly is an incredible city that I never had the opportunity to appreciate, and living here has been an amazing experience!
Favorite things to do in Philly: Anything related to food! So far, I have been successful in finding the best cheesesteak Philly has to offer, but my ongoing endeavors include finding the best BYOB restaurant, happy hour, french fries, and tacos. I also love walking through all of the different neighborhoods, hiking and biking the local trails (Wissahickon Park and Kelly Drive), and playing on recreational sports teams.
Katherine Duffey, MD
Hometown: Mount Laurel, NJ
Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Academic Interests: Medical Education, Liver Transplantation, Gender disparities in patient care and in medical education.
What I love about Jefferson: What so many other SKMC and residency alumns love about Jeff - the people. Every year the family grows with more welcoming, warm, and hard working people who are committed to fostering our collaborative environment. I am constantly inspired by the work my co-residents are doing, and I am so fortunate to call them my friends - it's an honor to help continue this culture of educational excellence and camaraderie as a chief resident.
Favorite things to do in Philly: There's not enough room on this page to allow me to adequately express my love for the greatest city in America. Where else can you run a 5K with a hockey mascot who hands out hotdogs to runners halfway through? Or sample one of the many affordable James Beard award-nominated and winning restaurants? Or walk to world renowed museums (Phila Museum of Art and Barnes Foundation), and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Independence Hall)? Or celebrate a Super Bowl win on Broad Street with a few thousand fans? Okay, that one was a few years ago, but we'll be back. Go Birds!
Michelle Hannon, MD
Hometown: Wappingers Falls, NY
Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Academic Interests: Gender disparities in Medicine, Medical Education (UME and GME), Quality Improvement, Patient Safety including early GME-level involvement in root cause analysis.
What I love about Jefferson: We all say it, because it's so true - the people! My co-residents and faculty mentors are simultaneously the most brilliant people I've ever met while being down to earth, hilarious, and kind. Absolutely nothing is more important than having colleagues who lift you up during a grueling 3 years of training. I cannot even count how many times my co-residents have dropped everything to help me with a sick patient and have comforted me after a rough shift, not to mention celebrating my successes alongside me and being there for all the important events in each other's lives (marriage, babies, homeownership - life keeps moving during residency!) The people here are the reason I went into Internal Medicine and I feel so lucky to call them my family.
Favorite things to do in Philly: Too many to name, but a recent favorite has been evening walks with my husband and our puppy along the Schuylkill River Trail. I love that Philly has all the amenities of any major city (art, music, culture, incredible outdoor spaces, you name it), but feels much more accessible than others. All the diverse neighborhoods are easily reachable from each other by walking, biking, or a short trip on public transit, so you can go from the Italian Market to Chinatown to busy Center City to a quiet tree-lined street all within one afternoon. The food is second to none and it is so affordable, thanks in part to the many restaurants that offer BYOB!
Evan Nardone, MD
Hometown: Williamsport, PA
Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Academic Interests: Medical Education, Resident Wellness, Cardiology, and Critical Care.
What I love about Jefferson: It sounds cliche, but I love the people here. Being surrounded by such a phenomenal group of coworkers drives me to be a better clinician every day. Residency has certainly presented many challenges, but the overwhelming support of not only my co-residents but also faculty, nurses, and anciallary staff have made this place feel like home. The culture of collegiality is pervasive throughout the program and the institution, and makes Jefferson a great place to learn and grow.
Favorite things to do in Philly: EAT! Philly's food scene is amazing and Jefferson is situated right in the middle of it all! There are multiple James Beard award-winning restaurants within blocks of the hospital. Even before COVID-19, tons of restaurants in Philly had outdoor dining so there's no shortage of options, even with the pandemic. Also, adopting a dog this year has really made me appreciate all the greenspace in center city and the hiking/running trails both in center city and a short trip outside the city.
