Foerderer Award for International Study

Open to Jefferson Center City Students Only

The Foerderer Award for International Study is made available to Jefferson Center City students in good academic standing in the College of health Professions, College of Life Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Population Health, College of rehabilitation Sciences, and Sidney Kimmel Medical College. The applications are on the studyaway.jefferson.edu website. Enrolled students may log in using their campus key and password. Go to the section, "Financial Aid & Scholarships", and scroll down to the Foerderer Award for the application materials.

Students may apply up to eight (8) months in advance for Foerderer Award funding that may cover up to 70 percent of estimated costs. If total expenses are $1,800 the student is expected to contribute at least $540. The limit per individual is $1,400; in the past, awards have ranged from $400 to the limit. Submitting as accurate a budget as possible is recommended.

Funding priorities are in this order: round trip airfare, program fees (if any), lodging, and supplies. Personal travel expenses will not be funded.

Applications will be accepted for travel between September 30 and May 14 in fall of each academic year. Applications for travel between May 15 and August 31 will be accepted and reviewed in January each academic year. Notification will be made by for the fall/spring application cycle by December 20, and by March 31 for the summer application cycle.

The review committee will consider many factors in choosing award recipients including: ties to one of Jefferson’s Global Centers/ Groups (India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, JCAP, Latin America); financial need; the specificity of program details and goals, completeness of the application; letter from the in-country mentor and recommendation; relationship between the proposed program to future career goals.

  3. Complete the application and the other components of the process

All students are interviewed before the decisions are made.

Evaluation

During the experience, students are required to keep a journal and comment on the clinical and or research aspects of their learning, as well as cultural and personal insights. If this will be a for-credit experience, the on-site supervisor will be asked to submit an evaluation at the end of the study period.  An overall evaluation of participation levels, supervision and areas of study is expected.

Upon return to Jefferson, students are required to

  1. provide and accounting of expenses actually incurred, including receipts covering at least the award amount
  2. submit a journal/report of the experience
  3. present an oral report of poster within their own College, or through Global Jefferson.

Academic credit may be granted only to those students who follow the additional guidelines established by each College. Information may be obtained from the Dean’s Office in the respective College.
