Steps to Register

For Students

There are three steps to register for Design Expo by February 19..

Step 1:
Get Your Resume Uploaded &
Reviewed in Handshake

Please allow 24-48 hours to get a review from our staff prior to February 5th.

First, be sure to update the content on your resume to make sure that you are uploading your most recent version.

Tips to Create a Design Resume

Use our Design Resume Examples (PDF) and Resume Writing Guide.

A great design resume includes:

  • Your most recent experiences and accomplishments (internships, industry-sponsored projects, awards, skills)
  • In the Education section, your graduation month and date (ex: May 2023)
  • The URL link to your portfolio website so that employers can easily view your work directly from your resume. Ideally, your portfolio website will also include your resume (on its own page or as a PDF). Make it easy for employers to find your work, regardless of where they begin.

If you would like to get your resume reviewed in person by our staff, stop into Kanbar 313 during our daily walk-in hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10 am - 1 pm
  • Tuesday & Thursday: 2 pm - 4 pm

How to Upload Your Resume & Get it Reviewed in Handshake

Once you have your most updated resume, upload it to Handshake in order to get it reviewed by our staff:

  • Log into Handshake using your Campus Key.
  • Click on Your Name at the top right, then click Documents
  • Click the Add New Document button and upload your most recent resume. If your file size is too big to upload, refer to this article for help compressing a PDF.
  • The status of your resume will now say "Pending." Please allow 24-48 hours for your resume to be reviewed by our staff.
    • If your resume needs changes: If we do not think your resume offers you a competitive chance at being invited to interview, we will email you suggested changes (the email will be sent from Handshake). Please make the changes we recommend and re-upload your new resume.
    • When your resume is ready for Step 2: The status of your resume will change to "Reviewed." That means your resume is now ready to submit for Design Expo. Continue to Step 2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not have an online portfolio?

No problem. We only need the URL link to secure your registration. Right now, you should simply register for a domain (you can create a free portfolio on Portfolium) so that you can submit the URL link (for instance: www.portfolium.com/yourname) to complete Step 3 by the deadline of Feb. 17 to register for Design Expo.

Your online portfolio can be unfinished or even blank by February 17. You will have more than 2 weeks to continue to update the CONTENT within your online portfolio until March 5 at 11:59 pm. Employers will not receive the links to your online portfolios until after that date.

What changes can I make to my portfolio after the February 17 deadline?

  • You cannot submit a new or updated online portfolio URL link.
  • You can continue updating the CONTENT within your online portfolio, such as adding new projects or photos, until March 5 at 11:59 pm. You may also continue to update your physical portfolio until the day of the event.

Next Steps for Registered Students

All students that have completed Steps 1-3 will be registered to attend
Design Expo.

During the week of March 20th, registered students will receive an email from Handshake to select a timeslot for each interview they were invited to have. Students are required to select a time slot, and attend said time slot, for each interview they have been invited to. Instructions on how to select an interview time slot(s) will be included in that email.
