Emotional Health & Wellness Program for House Staff

The years of residency can be among the most exciting and gratifying of a person’s life. However, being a resident can also cause significant amounts of stress and uncertainty. During these years, you may find it helpful to have additional support and encouragement. The psychiatric physicians and counselors of the Emotional Health and Wellness Program (EHWP) are available to provide the assistance and guidance House Staff officers need to achieve personal and professional success.

The goals of the EHWP for House Staff are to help identify problems early and promote efforts towards wellness and balance. There are many benefits to seeking support and counseling, particularly for a training physician. Counseling can help improve relationships with friends and family, help one manage stress more effectively, and help improve well-being. Research suggests that promoting well-being among resident physicians is linked to better interactions with colleagues, enhanced patient relationships, and improved performance in patient care.

The Emotional Health and Wellness Program for House Staff is staffed by a team of psychiatrists and licensed therapists who have expertise counseling residents and physicians. The program offers individual counseling and psychiatric consultation, as well as wellness workshops and health programs throughout the year. All Thomas Jefferson University House Staff are eligible for three visits without charge per year.
