Roles & Responsibilities

Biological Safety Program: provides guidance on working with biological materials including pathogenic microorganisms and/or potentially infectious material using proper laboratory practices and procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), safety equipment, and containment and facility design.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety provides:

  • Training and consultation on biological hazards and disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Inspection of laboratories.
  • Review of research protocols to determine applicable regulations

Laboratory Chemical Safety Program: provides guidance on working safely with hazardous chemicals, and identifies and corrects general laboratory hazards.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety provides:

  • Recommendations on safe storage and handling practices and proper personal protective equipment.
  • Inspection of laboratories.
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Guidelines for proper disposal of chemical waste.
