- One semester or quarter of Statistics
Additional coursework in the following areas are recommended but not required:
- Anatomy and physiology (highly recommended and encouraged)
- Molecular and Cellular Biology
Other requirements include:
- Counseling experience (e.g. paid or volunteer work on crisis hot-line, pregnancy/reproductive counseling service, or other service) is required.

Register for Match
The Jefferson MS program in Human Genetics & Genetic Counseling program is a participating program in the Genetic Counseling Admissions Match through National Matching Services (NMS) . The GC Admissions Match has been established to enhance the process of placing applicants into positions in masters-level genetic counseling programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). The Match uses a process that takes into account both applicants’ and programs’ preferences.
All applicants must first register for the Match with NMS before applying to participating genetic counseling graduate programs. At the conclusion of all program interviews, both applicants and programs will submit ranked lists of preferred placements to NMS according to deadlines posted on the NMS website. The binding results of the Match will be released to both applicants and programs simultaneously in late April.
It is recommended that applicants register for the Match by December 14, 2018. While applicants may register after this date, they should register early enough to ensure there is sufficient time for evaluations, interviews and rankings.

Upon registering, an NMS match code number will be generated; this number will be required to complete the program application.
Personal Statement: Submit a personal statement. Take this opportunity to tell us more about yourself that can not be garnered from your CV, transcripts, etc. and how these experiences or attributes relate to Genetic Counseling. The personal statement is a very important piece of the application review so this is your opportunity to shine.
The essay should be between 500 & 800 words, single-spaced, 12-point font (Calibri is preferred).
Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities they have attended. This includes any study-abroad programs or transfer credit not reflected on undergraduate transcripts with full course titles and final grades.
If your courses were completed outside of the United States, you must submit a course-by-course evaluation from World Education Services.

Three Letters of Reference Required
Letters of reference should be written by people who can comment from personal knowledge on the applicant's academic qualifications. Letters from individual faculty and one from a genetic counselor and/or geneticist are preferred.

Scores need to be received from ETS. Expired or unofficial scores will not be accepted.

DRUG, CRIMINAL BACKGROUND & CHILD ABUSE CLEARANCES
All students who are offered admission are required to have a criminal background check and child abuse clearance. In addition, PA students who are offered admission are required to be fingerprinted and undergo a drug test. Some clinical sites may require health professions and pharmacy students to be fingerprinted and/or undergo a drug test. The Office of Admissions will provide you with the appropriate information to complete these requirements, as needed.
Clinical rotation and fieldwork sites that require a criminal background check, child abuse clearance and/or fingerprinting may deny a student’s participation in the clinical experience, rotation or fieldwork because of a felony or misdemeanor conviction or a record of child abuse. Clinical sites may also deny participation in clinical experiences for other reasons, such as failure of a required drug test, or inability to produce an appropriate health clearance. As participation in clinical experiences, rotations or fieldwork is a required part of the curriculum and a requirement for graduation, denial of participation by a clinical site may result in delay of graduation or the inability to graduate from the Program.
Regardless of whether or not a student graduates from Thomas Jefferson University, individuals who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor may be denied certification or licensure as a health professional. Information regarding individual eligibility may be obtained from the appropriate credentialing bodies.
Technical Standards of the Department of Human Genetics & Genetic Counseling
- Ability to observe and participate in classroom exchanges, demonstrations, experiments and other learning venues in the applicable laboratory discipline or in interdisciplinary didactic and clinical settings.
- Ability to analyze, synthesize, solve problems and reach interpretive judgments.
- Sufficient use of the senses of vision, hearing, somatic sensation and motor movement necessary to learn and perform applicable laboratory procedures and associated data management in the classroom, clinical or research setting.
- Ability to communicate electronically, in writing and verbally with faculty, other students and professional colleagues with accuracy, clarity, efficiency and timeliness.
- Sufficient cognitive and physical ability to comply with physical, chemical and biohazard precautions.
The technical standards of the Department do allow for the use of an assistive device (or devices), program time extensions or other forms of support necessary to accomplish the requirements of the program. Such accommodation must be requested in a timely manner, and must be documented, reasonable, appropriate and available to the Department and/or the student.
