Visiting Externship for Underrepresented Minority Students in Medicine

About this rotation:

This rotation provides an opportunity for underrepresented minority students to have a month-long clinical experience in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson where they can get to know the institution, department, and residency program. This rotation may be done in the months of June, July, August or September.

Accepted applicants will be provided with a stipend that they may use to cover housing and/or transportation expenses.

Student Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled full-time 3rd year medical students in good academic standing at an LCME accredited medical school.
  • Students must belong to a group currently considered underrepresented in medicine: Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian.
  • Students must be planning to apply for a residency in the area of Internal Medicine

Application Information - Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Residency Program in Internal Medicine only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We cannot process applications received through any other electronic or paper medium.

Important Notes for Applicants

  • U.S. Clinical experience is required (observerships are not counted as USCE)

  • We do NOT offer observerships or externships

  • Graduation within the last 3 years is preferred

  • There are 33 Categorical spots and 4 Primary Care spots

  • Fellowship opportunities are available

  • We sponsor both H1 and J1 visas (we are exempt from the H1 cap)

  • You must be ECFMG certified to be considered for an interview (the only exception is if you are still in medical College)

  • We offer couples match

  • A minimum of 3 LORs are required (this can include your Chairman’s Letter)

* Additional USMLE Information – Internal Medicine interns are required to pass USMLE Step I and Step II (CK and CS). Please note that it takes approximately 4-8 weeks for the USMLE Board to release the scores; therefore we advise taking the exam no later than March of the year in which you are starting your internship.

How do I submit an application?

Thomas Jefferson University accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.

How many categorical and preliminary positions do you expect to offer?

We expect to offer 33 Categorical spots and 4 Primary Care spots  for the year ahead.

Where will I spend most of my time?

The Internal Medicine Residency program uses numerous clinical settings throughout the Jefferson Health System in order to give our house-staff the most diverse educational experience. House officers will spend time in the following sites: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; Methodist Hospital; the Veterans Administration Hospital in Wilmington, DE; Jefferson Hospital Ambulatory Practice; various Thomas Jefferson University affiliated subspecialty practices and local community internal medicine practices.

Does Thomas Jefferson University allow moonlighting opportunities for residents?

Opportunities are available at Methodist Hospital for second and third year residents.

Are there USMLE score requirements?

Our residency program is very competitive. Although scores on USMLE examinations are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements to apply to the program. We prefer to evaluate each applicant on his or her own individual merits.

Does Thomas Jefferson University accept applications from graduates of international medical colleges?

As stated earlier, we have a very competitive application process. However, graduates from any medical College are invited to submit applications, and will be subject to our usual application procedures. Recent clinical experience is highly encouraged. The University sponsors both H-1 and J-1 visas.

Does Thomas Jefferson University Hospital have a requirement in terms of year of graduation?

A graduation date within the last 3 years is highly preferred, but not mandatory.

Facilities Available to Residents

Computer Systems: Residents have access to computer systems throughout the University and Hospital. This includes access to UpToDate, Medline, MD Consult, Online Harrison, Micromedex and email/on-campus internet access. Regarding patient care, all labs and discharge summaries are on line as well as the non-telemetry floors' order entry.

Call Rooms: Residents, if they wish to stay in house, will also have access to private call rooms after being relieved of duty on call nights. There are no mandatory overnight calls.

Parking/Transportation: The University has numerous discounted or free parking opportunities surrounding all affiliated hospitals. Subway/bus tokens and regional rail passes are discounted as well for the residents taking advantage of public transportation. The University offers a "pre-tax" payroll deduction for all transportation expenses.

Tickets: The Residency program also offers complimentary tickets to local events. In the past these have included the Flyers, 76ers, Eagles, Phillies, the Walnut Street Theater and Philadelphia Orchestra. Tickets are dispersed among the residents via a lottery system.

Facilities: As University employees, residents have access to the University facilities (for a fee) such as daycare, gymnasium and pool facilities and discounts to local entertainment.

Lab Coats: All interns and second year residents receive three complimentary embroidered white lab coats. Laundry service is available at the Hospital for a nominal fee.

EPIC: Our electronic medical record system was recently upgraded to EPIC for both inpatient/outpatient medical records.  All of these systems are available remotely from home.


Please be advised that the Department of Medicine has implemented a new fee structure for all credentialing/verification requests. This policy applies only to requests for graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. 

Fee Structure:

SKMC - TJUH Standardized Verification Form: $25

Non-Standardized Verification Form: $50

Request for Expedited Service (additional fee): $10

Verification fees are waived for the following:

  • Current Residents

  • Recently Graduated Residents (within the last 5 years)
