At Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC), research is foundational to medicine and to everything we do. In keeping with Jefferson's mission to improve lives, research shapes how we teach, how we care for patients, and how we improve health in the communities we serve. SKMC faculty ask hard questions in the lab, at the bedside and across populations, and they pursue the answers together with colleagues across Jefferson and beyond. The result is a rich research culture that prepares the next generation of physicians and changes what's possible for patients.
From Molecule to Community
SKMC faculty conduct research across the full research spectrum of medicine. Basic scientists uncover the fundamental mechanisms of disease. Translational investigators turn those insights into new diagnostics and therapies. Clinical researchers test them in trials that bring promising treatments to patients sooner. Health services and population health researchers look at how care is delivered, who it reaches, and how to make it better.
The Driving Force Behind Jefferson Research
Research at Jefferson runs through Sidney Kimmel Medical College. SKMC faculty launched and lead many of Thomas Jefferson University's major research centers and institutes, including the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, Vickie & Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience, MitoCare Center for Mitochrondrial Imaging Research & Diagnostics, and the Jefferson Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute. These centers and institutes bring researchers and physician-scientists of all types together around shared questions, so each discovery benefits from every kind of expertise.
SKMC faculty bring in a large share of Jefferson's research funding and run clinical trials that give Jefferson Health patients access to tomorrow's treatments today. Their leadership drives Jefferson Health's academic mission.
Student Research
SKMC students take part in research from their first year. Through the JeffMD Scholarly Inquiry program, every student completes a mentored research project in an area of their choosing: clinical and translational research, design, digital health, health policy and systems, humanities, medical education, and population health research. Students collaborate with faculty, clinicians, and technical staff in mutually reinforcing efforts to gain the skills and experience that they need to become critical consumers and producers of medical knowledge.
Clinical & Translational Science Center
SKMC's Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) gives investigators the infrastructure, expertise and support to turn promising ideas into better health outcomes. The CTSC helps faculty at every career stage design strong studies, access biostatistics and data resources, engage patients and communities, and navigate the steps from early discovery to clinical trials. By connecting researchers across SKMC, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, the CTSC shortens the distance between the lab and the people who stand to benefit from its work.
