Dr. Kirby Wycoff is an interdisciplinary health scientist, doctoral educator, and research leader whose work focuses on advancing doctoral education, approaches to inquiry, and human-centered research capable of addressing complex health and social challenges. With a disciplinary foundation in psychology, her work spans health sciences, public health, education, and design, bringing multiple disciplinary perspectives to questions of human experience, health, and well-being.
She serves as Associate Professor and Director of the Doctor of Health Science (DHSc) and PhD in Health Science programs at Thomas Jefferson University, where she leads interdisciplinary doctoral education, research training, curriculum development, and the growth of international academic and research partnerships.
Dr. Wycoff's work centers on three interconnected areas: interdisciplinary doctoral education and researcher development; interdisciplinary research design and methodological pluralism; and human-centered and participatory research in complex health and social contexts.
Her research centers lived experience and seeks to understand human responses to adversity, systems of support, and the conditions that shape health and well-being. Through human-centered and participatory approaches, she brings the knowledge and perspectives of people, communities, and professionals closest to complex problems into the research process.
She is particularly interested in how researchers move from complex real-world problems to rigorous research questions and appropriate approaches to inquiry, rather than beginning with predetermined disciplinary or methodological traditions. This perspective informs both her scholarship and her approach to mentoring doctoral researchers.
Increasingly, Dr. Wycoff's leadership focuses on building interdisciplinary, international, and cross-sector research and training ecosystems. She develops doctoral programs, mentorship models, international learning experiences, and collaborative research partnerships that connect universities, health systems, community organizations, researchers, and students
Dr. Wycoff's clinical work informs and guides her scholarship, and her current research agenda focuses on Adverse Childhood Experiences, intergenerational trauma, disparity and inequity, cultural disproportionality, school policy and trauma-informed systems all within the framework of public health and resiliency. She is particularly interested in child, maternal and family health and wellness in school, community and clinical settings.
