Dr. Karen Alexander Selected for Duck-Hee Kang Memorial Mentored Workshop
The Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (Council) announced today the selection of six outstanding early career nurse scientists to participate in the 2019 Duck-Hee Kang Memorial Mentored Workshop. The competitively chosen group of postdoctoral and new faculty will receive research mentoring from senior nurse scientists during a one-day workshop on October 22, 2019 in Washington, DC. The Council is an open membership initiative of the American Academy of Nursing whose mission is promoting better health through nursing science.
"We are delighted to offer the second annual Duck-Hee Kang Memorial Mentored Workshop,” said Council Chair Holli DeVon, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN. "The selected participants represent the best and brightest rising nurse scientists from all over the country. We are thrilled to be able to be a part of the trajectory of their careers and look forward to seeing the work they accomplish in the future."

The workshop will provide the opportunity to have a submitted research grant proposal critiqued by a senior investigator, as well as to participate as a member of a National Institutes of Health style mock review panel.
Presented by the Council’s Early Career Special Interest Group, the workshop honors the late Duck- Hee Kang, PhD, RN, FAAN, who was the Lee and Joseph D. Jamail Distinguished Professor at UTHealth School of Nursing, part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Kang, who died unexpectedly in 2016, was highly regarded as a biobehavioral nurse scientist and an outstanding research mentor to those at the start of their career. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2003.
"Dr. Kang was the quintessential mentor to students and early career faculty," said Marti Rice, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and chair of the advisory committee responsible for the selections. "This workshop honors her memory and provides an exceptional opportunity for mentoring in proposal development and review for the selected participants. She would have been so pleased."
