Why has gastroschisis increased over time and why is is more common in infants of young mothers?

Periconceptional intakes of methyl donors and other micronutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism may further reduce the risk of neural tube defects in offspring: a United States population-based case-control study of women meeting the folic acid requirements.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Smith-Webb is a perinatal epidemiologist whose research focuses on identifying modifiable risk factors for congenital anomalies, examining maternal health exposures and behaviors during pregnancy, and investigating racial and ethnic disparities in adverse maternal outcomes. Her work aims to strengthen the measurement and reporting of maternal outcomes and generate evidence to inform interventions that reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes and address persistent health disparities.
