Biography

Dr. Verma is the Associate Chair and Director of Research in the Department of Medicine at Jefferson Einstein Hospital. She is an internationally recognized health services researcher whose work focuses on patient-centered outcomes research, implementation science, and health system interventions, with a strong emphasis on translating evidence into meaningful improvements in clinical care.

Dr. Verma developed the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research pillar within the Department of Medicine and leads a research program focused on optimizing models of care across primary and specialty settings. She led the PAL LIVER trial, a cluster-randomized controlled trial supported by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), which evaluated models of palliative care for patients with advanced liver disease. She presented primary results of the PAL LIVER trial at the Clinical Plenary Session of 2025 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Annual Meeting. These were subsequently published in JAMA Internal Medicine. She has also contributed to the AASLD guideline on palliative care in advanced liver disease and holds leadership positions in this national professional organization among others.

Her research focuses on improving patient-centered outcomes through evidence-based, integrated approaches to care and developing effective strategies to accelerate the implementation of research findings into clinical practice. A central goal of her work is to shorten the gap between evidence generation and bedside care, ensuring that effective interventions are successfully translated into routine clinical practice.

As Director of Research, she oversees clinical research activities across all 13 divisions within the Department of Medicine, fostering a coordinated and collaborative research enterprise. She is also committed to mentoring the next generation of investigators and has mentored numerous students, trainees, and research staff. Dr. Verma serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College.
