The cereal box served to be an innocent child that is wrapped in kitenge (East African textile) that I coated in flowers. The movement of placing the flowers onto the board that held the box was liberating, especially during this period of my life. I feel many pieces are still trying to mend themselves together and find meaning in the chaos of growth. My immediate title to this piece was Growing Pains. This has been a continual theme I have been focusing on — the idea of leaving the old self and the past and striving for a future enriched with growth and healing. I have been focusing on the mystery, pain, and healing elements of letting go of the past self, accepting the new self, and working through parts that long for healing and peace.
