Sensitive Cereal by Sara Guiang

I have been told I’m sensitive my entire life. It affects how I view myself, my relationships with others, and my experiences. And I think the message I’ve gotten about sensitivity is that it’s a shameful thing to be. I wanted a different message, to define what this word feels like for me. So, I went to childlike comforts — something I often do when I feel shame. For this piece, it was cereal. I like that you can pick and choose which parts of cereal you want to eat and when, that cereal can be sugary and sweet. I wanted my “sensitive cereal” to be better understood in all of its sugary bits, which is why I chose these words for it.
