COVID-19 Better Together Fund Supports University Community

Apr 2, 2020
Mike Bederka

Donations help Jefferson employees and students in need.

To support employees and students impacted by the pandemic, the Jefferson Enterprise has established the COVID-19 Better Together Fund.

“I am inspired by the Jefferson community every day, but now more than ever,” says Dr. Stephen K. Klasko, president of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health. “Our caregivers are sacrificing to be on the front line in caring for patients. Our support teams are providing the services needed to operate our hospitals. Our students are working hard to stay focused on their studies while away from campus.”

I am inspired by the Jefferson community every day, but now more than ever.

Dr. Stephen K. Klasko

This fund will help Jefferson colleagues and students in facing challenges, such as:

  • Fund transportation for employees if public transit becomes compromised;
  • Subsidize eldercare or childcare options for employees who have limited-to-no support;
  • Assist employees facing hardships, and ensuring food and housing security;
  • Offer resources for mental health, counseling and psychosocial support services for employees;
  • Support JeffSecure, the emergency fund to assist students with financial assistance for the unexpected, unforeseen and unavoidable emergency expenses due to campus closures.

Right now, we’re seeing how much Jefferson matters to our city, our community.

Dr. Elizabeth Dale

“Philanthropy is and always has been a part of the fabric of America, especially in times of crisis,” says Dr. Elizabeth Dale, executive vice president and chief development officer at Jefferson. “Since we launched the COVID-19 Better Together Fund, I’ve been overwhelmed and inspired by the outpouring of generosity, whether it’s been a $10 gift or a $100,000 matching gift. Right now, we’re seeing how much Jefferson matters to our city, our community.”

Dr. Klasko and all 23 members of his leadership team have contributed more than $170,000 to launch the fund. Since the fund’s launch, alumni and benefactors have given in a big way, including setting up additional matching gift opportunities. Further, Dr. Klasko has directed Jefferson to match all gifts to the fund up to $1 million.

As of Wednesday, April 1, the University raised just over $900,000. That means with the Jefferson match, the total funds currently available are more than $1.9 million, and fundraising is ongoing.

Jefferson employees in need of support can complete an application on the COVID-19 Preparedness Page on myJeffHub. Students can fill out an application on the JeffSecure page. For those without web access, call the Human Resources Service Center at (215) 503-4772.
