The Kanbar College of Design, Engineering and Commerce will offer high-school students a weeklong in-person and virtual “pre-college workshop” with a purpose-driven curriculum to give them insights into future educational and professional paths for textile design.
Kanbar to Host Pre-College Textile Design Workshop for High School Students
The week-long ‘Design Identity’ offering will give participants a chance to ‘explore a creative path for their college experience.’
Over the course of five days in July, students in the Design Identity Workshop will learn more about textile design disciplines focused on color, texture, materiality, trend and end use.
Each day, a new technique will be paired with a presentation from an industry professional. The topics to be examined are ideation exploration, print practices, machine knitting, weaving on a floor loom and presentation preparation, including tips on how to photograph creative work for a portfolio.
The 'Design Identity' camp will introduce students to textiles as apparel and home furnishings.
Virtual students will have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with each of their instructors, and each day will be presented with a new prompt for creating compelling work out of materials they have at home.
All students will be introduced to textiles as apparel and home furnishings, and will leave with an understanding of the importance of textiles in everyday life.
Jen Rhodes is the assistant director of the BS in Textile Design program and a former workshop attendee.
“Attending the summer workshop some years ago was a wonderful surprise,” says Rhodes. “I hadn’t heard of textile design before my high school art teacher suggested I try it. Without the workshop, I would never have found such a fun and rewarding career.”
The workshop offers in-person and virtual sessions focused on color, texture, materiality, trend and end use.
The in-person workshop will be held from July 12 to 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday. The virtual offering will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each day. The cost is $250 for in-person attendees and $100 for fully virtual participants.
