Eliza Shirley

The Eliza Shirley Shelter is one of the largest shelters for women and children. It serves as the intake shelter to provide short term housing and intermediate placement for families. The Eliza Shirley House is an emergency shelter facility with two missions: to provide short term lodging, meals and immediate needs to displaced families, city wide on weekday nights and over holidays and weekends; and to provide longer term residential counseling, social work and referral services to homeless single and pregnant women 18 or older, 365 days a year. The Eliza Shirley House provides safe, sanitary housing in a drug/alcohol-free environment. Nutritious meals are served and caring, experienced staff are on hand at all times. Qualified volunteers provide free legal services, medical care, and referral services.

Directions

From JAH, take 11th Street to Arch Street and turn left. Continue down Arch to 13th Street. The Eliza Shirley House is the first building on the left side. It is next to a large parking lot and the sidewall is covered by a mural of flowers. Ring the doorbell for entry and tell the staff worker at the front desk that you are from JeffHOPE.

The JeffHOPE clinic at Eliza Shirley provides general adult and pediatric care to the residents of this shelter. In addition, JeffHOPE is collaborating with the Office to Advance Population Health at Thomas Jefferson University to provide routine breast health education for the women at Eliza Shirley and free mammograms to women who are uninsured. JeffHOPE for Kids provides supervision as well as educational programming for children residing at Eliza Shirley during the hours of operation for the clinic. Approximately 10-20 patients (women and children) are seen every Monday evening.

In 2007, the JeffHOPE clinic at Eliza Shirley was expanded by adding a private exam room. This new exam room will allow for short surgical procedures, address patients’ gynecologic concerns, and give patients the privacy they desire.
