PhD Programs
Applying

The applicant must possess or expect to receive, prior to matriculation in the Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences (JCBS):

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Competitive Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores

A strong background in the sciences is also considered essential to success in the graduate program.  Students who have successfully completed graduate courses at another institution may petition for transfer of up to 18 credits towards the degree.

When the JCBS Admissions Office receives the applications, they forward those from applicants possessing appropriate qualifications to the Program Admissions Committee for review. The Admissions Office then extends invitations for interviews to competitive applicants. These interviews are conducted by the Directors of the Graduate Program, members of the Program Admissions Committee and other program faculty who are conducting research in an area in which the applicant has expressed an interest. The applicant also has the opportunity to meet with graduate students currently matriculated into the program.

Following the interview process, the Admissions Committee submits a recommendation to the Directors of the Graduate Program concerning the acceptability of applicants for admission into the graduate program. The Directors of the Graduate Program then make recommendations for admission to the Dean of the College of Biomedical Sciences, who makes the final decision regarding admissions. The Director of Admissions of Thomas Jefferson University Graduate Program notifies each student regarding whether or not they have been accepted into the graduate program.

Student Fellowships

Fellowships are awarded to eligible full-time graduate students as a means of financial support for graduate study. Graduate study involves active participation in academic studies, as well as in laboratory research and teaching. The fellowship is contingent upon maintaining active, full-time status in good standing and ongoing participation in all aspects of the PhD program on a daily basis.
