Research and Clinical Interests
Andrew Wu, PhD, graduated with his PhD majoring physics at Temple University and was trained as a post-doctorial Fellow in medical physics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, in early seventies. He was an assistant professor at Tufts University, Boston, and head of clinical physics at New England Medical Center in early eighties. In 1988, Dr. Wu came to join as a professor at University of Pittsburgh and was Director of the Division of Medical Physics, Department of Radiation Oncology, at the UPMC. During his time in Pittsburgh, Dr. Wu provided a number of new therapies that further advanced radiation oncology at UPMC. These therapies include stereotactic radiosurgery with gamma knife and cyberknife, minimally invasive brachytherapy implants, intensity modulated radiation therapy, and 4D motion driven radiation therapy.
In the middle of 2004, Dr. Wu retired from his position as Director of Medical Physics at University of Pittsburgh and came to join as Clinical Professor and Program Director of Medical Dosimetry Program at Thomas Jefferson University . Since then, he was instrumental and critical for the establishment of this new Medical Dosimetry Program at Thomas Jefferson University . He has also played a central role in effectively organizing and implementing the curriculum of essential courses, the net work of clinical training sites, recruitment of great students, establishment of treatment planning laboratory for students, and participation of Stanford's DTT program since its inception in September of 2004.
Dr. Wu has had numerous peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters published in national prestigious journals, and made many presentations in professional meetings. He was also well known internationally and was invited to Taiwan, China, Brazil, and other countries for lecturing and teaching radiation oncology residents.
Dr. Wu is a member of a number of prestigious organizations, including the American Board of Radiology and American College of Medical Physics. He was board director of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and was board chancellor of the American College of Medical Physicists. He is also a member and an elected Fellow of American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
