Curriculum
Each academic year is divided into 17 three week blocks with carefully selected rotations across multiple sites to provide a complete and robust EM education.
PGY-1
During intern year, all emergency medicine blocks are at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The emphasis is placed on learning to provide excellent care to each individual patient, with exposure to special patient populations and a variety of settings. We also include a longitudinal exposure to pediatric emergency medicine at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children during EM blocks.
PGY-2
During the second year, we begin to include a variety of community emergency medicine experiences, including at Jefferson Methodist Hospital, Paoli Hospital, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. You will also have dedicated pediatric EM blocks at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, trauma blocks at Jefferson Torresdale, and exposure to teaching, operations, and niche procedures. You will gain experience in managing the flow of the department and have time to explore various subspecialties.
PGY-3
As in the second year, you continue to rotate at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Jefferson Methodist Hospital, Paoli Hospital, and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital. The focus is now on managing an entire section of the ED and mentoring junior residents and students.
