The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University (SKCCC) at Thomas Jefferson University established the Division of Population Science in 2008 to address critical aspects of cancer care that extend beyond clinical treatment. The division was created to centralize and strengthen research efforts focused on cancer prevention, early detection, and survivorship, with an emphasis on improving outcomes at the population level.

By advancing applied research in behavioral, social, and epidemiological sciences, the division aims to develop innovative strategies that enhance the quality of cancer care in real-world settings. A key motivation for its formation was the need to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes by studying and addressing the social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to unequal cancer risks and treatment experiences among diverse and underserved populations.

Through this work, the Division of Population Science plays a vital role in helping SKCCC shift its focus toward preventing cancer, improving care delivery, and promoting health equity.
