Computer Requirements

Industrial Design is platform-agnostic. Students are free to choose Windows or Mac computers. Students on Mac, however, must be able to run Windows programs such as Solidworks. The best way to accomplish this is by installing Bootcamp and a separately-purchased copy of Windows on a disk partition. The consensus of opinion among students is that Parallels Desktop does not offer adequate Windows performance for CAD use.

We require students to have the ability to draw directly on a professional-grade tablet. This can be a Wacom Intuos Pro accessory drawing tablet, or Apple iPad Pro with Apple Pencil. Microsoft Surface Pro 4 can be used for drawing, but it does NOT offer adequate graphics performance to run Solidworks.

Required Software:

  • Microsoft Office (Office365 is free with @students.philau.edu email)
  • Granta Free - Campus Bookstore

The following programs are used in industrial design visualization and studio courses, although not all programs are used in all courses. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with course instructors and to be ready to run software needed for class.
