Our residency offers an exceptional platform for scholarly growth, grounded in the care of medically complex patients across high-acuity surgical services. The volume, depth, and diversity of pathology encountered here naturally generate meaningful academic opportunities, from compelling case reports to broader clinical inquiry presented at regional and national meetings. Faculty are expected to actively involve residents in scholarship whenever possible, fostering a culture where intellectual curiosity is embedded in daily practice and where clinical excellence and academic engagement evolve together.
Scholarly development is further reinforced through a structured Quality Improvement curriculum that begins in the CA-1 year, with residents organized into longitudinal “Houses” to design and execute mentored projects. For those seeking greater immersion, the department provides strong mentorship to pursue more substantial academic work. Whether contributing to a case report, leading a QI initiative, or developing a larger research endeavor, residents are encouraged—and meaningfully supported—to translate clinical insight into scholarly impact.
