Thomas Jefferson University Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) encourages our fellows to broaden their training to gain additional perspectives and expertise during the three-year fellowship program.

We provide mentorship and support to our trainees who are interested in pursuing Global Health opportunities during their Jefferson MFM fellowship. We recognize and endorse the benefits of gaining exposure to different cultures, perspectives and healthcare systems in the pursuit of improving obstetrical care in underserved communities.

Bud Weiner Global Health Fund: the fund was established in honor of Dr. Stuart “Bud” Weiner who spent his career improving lives right here in Philadelphia and around the world. He has led trips to Africa, South America and Southeast Asia to advance clinical care and research, and to educate residents and fellows who joined him on his global journeys. This fund builds on Bud’s legacy to support future global health opportunities to conduct research and provide outstanding care to those who need it most, wherever they are in the world.

Queenan Global Health Fellowship: the fellowship offers four opportunities for funding in the area of global health for Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialists related to maternal and child health in low- and middle-income countries. TJU MFM graduate and faculty member, Rebekah McCurdy, MD, was the Queenan Visiting Teaching Fellowship grant recipient during her fellowship.

Research: a recommended opportunity for public health research is with Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), which are nationally representative household surveys for a given host country that provides data for a range of monitoring and impact evaluation indicators related to population, health and nutrition.

Conferences & Presentations: a recommended opportunity for research conferences and presentations with a global impact is with the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), which strives to help everyone in the world have access to ultrasound through the advancement and dissemination of ultrasound education and research.

At Thomas Jefferson University, the College of Population Health and the College of Life Sciences offer a variety of certificate, master’s and doctoral courses and degree programs that complement our MFM Fellowship training. To support our trainees’ pursuit of additional advanced education, Jefferson will provide tuition assistance for 90% of tuition, up to $7,500 per calendar year, and the Department will cover the remaining 10%.
