Jefferson Launches Newly Approved IPAL Program

Dec. 28, 2023: The College of Architecture & the Built Environment achieved a significant milestone with the recent approval of its application to participate in the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) program.

This approval – by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) – offers students a unique opportunity to streamline their paths toward becoming licensed architects, and sets the stage for a transformative educational experience.

IPAL will offer students the opportunity to become a licensed architect in six years, with opportunities to gain real world experience and complete registration exams while still in school.

“It paves a direct route for aspiring architects to seamlessly integrate practice and learning, shaping a future where knowledge and design converge,” according to Dean Barbara Klinkhammer. “One of the standout features of the IPAL program is its potential to significantly reduce the traditional timeline for architectural licensure.

“While the national average typically spans 13 years from the commencement of architectural education to licensure, IPAL offers students an exceptional seven-year head start in their professional careers. This accelerated pathway not only expedites the journey to licensure but also provides students with invaluable real-world experience during their academic journey.”

John Dwyer, chair of the Department of Agriculture, notes that the program “holds great potential to build equity” in the profession.

“By allowing students the ability to take registration exams and earn professional experience while in school, we set them up for success while decreasing their opportunity cost,” Dwyer says. “We believe this can widen the pipeline to the profession and position our graduates as professional leaders.”

Launching in Fall 2024,  IPAL represents a a six-year accelerated dual degree program combining the college’s Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies with the professional Master of Architecture degree – accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The College of Architecture and the Built Environment also offers a five-year professional degree Bachelor of Architecture program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
