Becoming an Architect
The Architectural Experience Program®
The Architectural Experience Program® [AXP™] provides a framework to guide students through gaining and recording professional experience. Developed by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards [NCARB], the program is required by most U.S. jurisdictions and is a key step on the path to earning a license. Through the AXP, you’ll learn how to safely and competently handle the scenarios you’ll face as an architect. With broad experience areas that reflect the current phases of practice, the program prepares you for everything from site design to project management.
The Architectural Experience Program [AXP] is one of three major requirements for individuals interested in becoming Registered Architects.
Path to Licensure
Before you can call yourself an architect, you have to earn a license by completing your state’s specific requirements. Each of the 54 U.S. licensing boards sets requirements for licensure in their jurisdiction, but they all include three core components: education, experience, and examination.
Education. Most states require a degree from a program accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board [NAAB].
Experience. No matter where you intend to practice, you’ll have to earn and document a certain amount of professional experience to ensure you’re ready to be an architect. You can start AXP as soon as you graduate from high school. Explore the AXP.
Examination. Completion of the Architect Registration Exam [ARE] is required prior to receiving an Architecture License. All 54 U.S. jurisdictions require you to pass the Architect Registration Examination® State specific licensing requirements

Architect Licensing Advisor
Professor Carol Herman, AIA, a full-time faculty member and registered architect (Pennsylvania) serves as our Architect Licensing Advisor [ALA]. Prof. Hermann remains current with Architectural Experience Program [AXP] and professional licensing issues. She also organizes AXP presentations in addition to advising students on AXP and the path to professional licensure. Typically, every year NCARB representatives visit the architecture program and present students with a good overview of AXP and the professional licensure process as well as providing students with valuable information on how to begin the process. Internships
At Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University), we see internships as a crucial part of your college education. Our students combine internship experience (often multiple internships) with on-campus industry experiences to gain valuable experience and industry connections. It's why so many employers seek out Jefferson graduates.
You can also report relevant experience for AXP credit with a paid internship experience while employed by an architecture firm, working under an AXP™ supervisor who is licensed to practice architecture in the United States or Canada.
