Graduate Student Association

Philanthropy & Community Service

The GSA is committed to serving the Philadelphia community and fostering scientific education in the area.

Each year, we host a Halloween Charity Raffle to raise money for a local charity or nonprofit whose mission is to promote the wellness and/or education of people in our community. Local Philadelphia area businesses donate items for raffle baskets that students can bid on, and the proceeds are donated to the designated charity or nonprofit for that year.

In past years, we’ve donated to: Science Education AcademyPhiladelphia Futures, and more. This year GSA will be donating proceeds to PAGES, an organization that hosts mini-conferences for sixth grade girls interested in science to give them exposure to science experiments from a young age. PAGES hopes to increase young girls’ interest and exposure to science and help them network and learn from women in STEM fields.

Interested in donating? Email GSA@jefferson.edu to find out how to donate to this year’s Halloween Charity Raffle.

We also participate in several service oriented events throughout the year. Last year, representatives participated in the Science Education Academy Stem-a-thon, during which the GSA helped guide science experiments for kids and presented posters about their research to the children and their parents. Every year, GSA members run a booth at the annual Philadelphia Science Festival and lead fun, hands-on experiments for kids to foster a love of science and encourage science education from an early age.

There are many ways to get involved with outreach and service through GSA. Look out for opportunities in the GSA bi-monthly Newsletters or email gsa@jefferson.edu to learn more.
