Chairman's Message

Welcome to the Thomas Jefferson University Internal Medicine Residency! In matching with our program you will be joining a community of scholars dedicated to outstanding patient care as well as basic and clinical research and innovative education. The Department of Medicine offers two tracks in its residency program: a categorical internal medicine three-year program, and a primary care three-year program. Supporting the residency are more than 200 full-time faculty and volunteers across all the medical specialties.

The training experience has widely diverse settings from the tertiary/quaternary care medical setting at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to the primary and secondary care medical practices at its major community hospital, Jefferson Methodist Hospital.  The continuing thread for the residency is the continuity ambulatory care practice in which each resident participates throughout the entire residency. For this experience, the resident is assigned to a firm with other residents and faculty preceptors. Thus, the resident gets to experience not only his/her patients, but also the patients of his peers who are a part of his/her firm.

Thomas Jefferson University is committed to teaching not only state-of-the-art medicine but also innovative, new medical practice in one of its many Centers of Excellence. This latter experience incorporates translational research into the patient care setting.  Our top-rated programs include those in Cancer, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology and Endocrine Disorders.

In addition, Thomas Jefferson University has spearheaded developing the Jefferson Health system, an 18-hospital consortium with multiple practice sites throughout the Delaware Valley. All components of Jefferson Health are fiscally sound and offer unique educational sites for our residents and students. Jefferson Health has one of the largest primary care networks in the Delaware Valley region, which includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. Many community practice sites are available to our residents for private practice ambulatory care rotations. The locale of Jefferson Health member hospitals and practices spans diverse socioeconomic groups, which means a diversity of illnesses and care needs for the patient and their families.

The program's emphasis on teaching is not only attending-based but also incorporates a formal process to develop the resident as teacher. The resident, intern, and student inpatient team focus on this teaching mode on a day-to-day basis with the attending of record and is enhanced by a teaching attending, didactic lectures, and formal and informal conferences. Professionalism in medicine is emphasized by conduct and style. Peer support and interaction are strongly encouraged and fostered in a friendly, yet highly academic setting. Graduates of the residency program are in all 50 states, as well as other continents. Given that Thomas Jefferson University has the largest number of living medical alumni that is extremely active, residents have been placed in highly competitive fellowships, as well as community and academic practice sites.

I welcome your application to see the Thomas Jefferson University family in action.

Gregory C. Kane, MD
Chair, Department of Medicine
Jane and Leonard Korman Professor, Pulmonary Medicine
