How do I submit an application?

Thomas Jefferson University accepts all applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications submitted in any other form will not be reviewed.

How many categorical and preliminary positions do you expect to offer?

We expect to offer 33 Categorical spots and four Primary Care spots for the year ahead.

Where will I spend most of my time?

The Internal Medicine Residency program uses numerous clinical settings throughout the Jefferson Health System in order to give our house-staff the most diverse educational experience. House officers will spend time in the following sites: Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; Methodist Hospital; Jefferson Hospital Ambulatory Practice; various Thomas Jefferson University affiliated subspecialty practices and local community internal medicine practices.

Does Thomas Jefferson University allow moonlighting opportunities for residents?

Opportunities are available at Methodist Hospital for second and third year residents.

Are there USMLE score requirements?

While USMLE scores are an important factor in our selection process, there are no official score requirements to apply to the program.

Does Thomas Jefferson University accept applications from graduates of international medical colleges?

Applications from International Medical Graduates are accepted. Recent clinical experience is highly encouraged. Graduation within the past three years is highly preferred.  The University sponsors both H-1 and J-1 visas.

Does Thomas Jefferson University Hospital have a requirement in terms of year of graduation?

A graduation date within the last three years is highly preferred, but not mandatory.

  • Pulmonary Associates (Outpatient)

Also, please keep in mind that we require a minimum of 6-8 weeks in order to process your information (electives are not offered in June/July due to the start-up of the academic year). Learn about our Personalized Career Pathway option that is designed to enhance a variety of potential career choices. 

Computer Systems: Residents have access to computer systems throughout the University and Hospital. This includes access to UpToDate, Medline, MD Consult, Online Harrison, Micromedex and email/on-campus internet access. Regarding patient care, all labs and discharge summaries are on line as well as the non-telemetry floors' order entry.

Parking/Transportation: The University has numerous discounted parking opportunities surrounding all affiliated hospitals. Subway/bus tokens and regional rail passes are discounted as well for the residents taking advantage of public transportation. The University offers a "pre-tax" payroll deduction for all transportation expenses.

Tickets: The Residency program also offers complimentary tickets to local events. In the past these have included the Flyers, 76ers, Eagles, Phillies, the Walnut Street Theater and Philadelphia Orchestra. Tickets are dispersed among the residents via a lottery system.

Facilities: As University employees, residents have access to the University facilities (for a fee) such as daycare, gymnasium and pool facilities and discounts to local entertainment.

Lab Coats: All interns and second year residents receive three complimentary embroidered white lab coats. Laundry service is available at the Hospital for a nominal fee.

EMR: The electronic medical record system used across Jefferson Health is EPIC for both inpatient and outpatient medical records.  EPIC is also available remotely from home.

Please be advised that the Department of Medicine has implemented a new fee structure for all credentialing/verification requests. This policy applies only to requests for graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. 

Fee Structure:

  • ACGME Standardized Verification Form: $50
  • Non-Standardized Verification Form: $75
  • Request for Expedited Service (additional fee): $10

Verification fees are waived for the following:

  • Current Residents

  • Recently Graduated Residents (within the last 5 years)

  • Government Agencies

  • State Boards

Please allow 7-10 business days for processing. Checks should be made payable to "TJUH - Department of Medicine" and mailed to the Department of Medicine, 1025 Walnut Street, Room 805, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

All requests must be accompanied by the resident's signed authorization.
