Acute Care Surgery

Our Division has an extensive footprint within Jefferson and beyond, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City as well as several Level II Trauma Centers in the Tri-State region.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital

At our Center, patients have access to the medical team behind our Level 1 Trauma Center, including surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and case managers.

We are an accredited Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and a referral center for multiple suburban communities and trauma centers in the region. With one of the highest transfer volume rates in Pennsylvania, our Program provides immediate surgical services and care to critically injured patients.

Our Center fosters interdisciplinary collaboration that crosses global campuses and community borders ultimately to save lives and reduce disability. Our injury science experts devote themselves to conducting research, providing education, engaging social entrepreneurship and partnering with communities in the Delaware Valley and beyond.

Regional Level II Trauma Centers

After the success of the physician-led Trauma Program at Paoli Hospital, we were approached by Lankenau Medical Center (part of Main Line Health) in 2015 to establish a new Jefferson-led Level II trauma center on their campus.

The Lakenau Medical Center Emergency Department sees 55,000 patients per year. Located at 100 E. Lancaster Avenue in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, Lankenau Medical Center is a 370 bed facility incorporating:

  • a newly built (as well as renovated/expanded) Emergency Department including 3 state of the art Trauma Resuscitation Bay,
  • a 14 suite operating room including "hybrid" and minimally invasive/robotic suites, and
  • dedicated SICU, MICU, and CTICU units

The Trauma Program went on-line in January of 2016 and has continually received full accreditation from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.

In January of 2010, the we embarked on a new venture with Thomas Jefferson University and Paoli Hospital (part of Main Line Health) to provide trauma services to the western suburban areas of Philadelphia opening a new Level II trauma center at Paoli Hospital.

Located at 255 W. Lancaster Avenue in Paoli, Pennsylvania, the 226 bed facility incorporates:

  • an Emergency Department that sees 35,000 patients per year,
  • a 14 suite operating room,
  • and an intensive care unit.

The trauma center is staffed 24/7 by members of our division and incorporates a CT scanner and nearby operating rooms. The Trauma Program went on-line in January of 2010 and received it's first accreditation from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation in August 2010.

We are an accredited Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and a referral center for multiple suburban communities and trauma centers in the region. With one of the highest transfer volume rates in Pennsylvania, our Program provides immediate surgical services and care to critically injured patients.
