Jefferson’s Medical Billing and Coding Certificate Prepares Students for Jobs of the Future in Rapidly Growing Field

Dozens of new learners will start the online program with support from Philadelphia Works.

In December, Jessica Fleming earned her undergraduate certificate in Jefferson’s medical billing and coding program. She says the hands-on training, experienced faculty and preparation for industry certifications increased her employability and boosted her confidence to work efficiently in one of health care’s fastest-growing fields.

“I appreciated Jefferson’s supportive learning environment and flexible options, which made it easier to balance my education and personal responsibilities while working toward a career in health care,” says Fleming, who works in the utilization management department for an area health network. “I developed strong skills in accurately assigning medical codes, understanding insurance claims and following healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA. The program also strengthened my attention to detail and organizational and time-management skills, which are essential in this field.”

Jessica Fleming says earning the medical billing and coding certificate at Jefferson increased her employability and boosted her confidence to work efficiently and accurately.

The medical billing and coding certificate, within Jefferson’s Institute of Emerging Health Professions, will soon expand its reach. Philadelphia Works recently awarded the program a vocational skills training contract for over $900,000, says Dr. Laura Pontiggia, professor and associate dean of academic programs for the College of Health Professions.

The funds will support 40 students, particularly those who have faced barriers to higher education and stable employment, in completing Jefferson’s 24-credit online certificate and earning the Certified Professional Coder certification, Dr. Pontiggia says. This support will play a key role in closing critical workforce gaps in health care, promoting economic mobility and creating lasting community impact.

“As the healthcare industry continues to expand and evolve, the demand for skilled professionals who can navigate the complexities of medical billing and coding is critical,” she says. “Medical billers and coders are essential to ensuring that healthcare providers receive accurate and timely reimbursements for their services, which directly impacts the quality of patient care and financial health of institutions. With advancements in technology and the integration of AI, the role of coding professionals is evolving rapidly and requires specialized training.”

Jefferson’s program combines traditional academic online coursework and hands-on experience using industry-standard coding software to empower students with the skills and credentials needed to enter the high-demand career, Dr. Pontiggia says. The program also exposes students to AI technologies transforming the field by enhancing coding accuracy and efficiency.

“Our graduates are ready for the jobs of the future,” she says.
