Dr. Susanna M. Nazarian was born in Seattle, Washington, and attended Lakeside School, where she was a National Merit Scholar. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1997, Highest Honors and Distinction with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.A. in Comparative Literature. She attended the University of North Carolina as a Morehead Scholar and served as Hyparchos in the Order of the Golden Fleece. She was awarded the Ferebee Taylor Award, the Merck Index Award, the E.J. Evans Award, and the Jim Tatum Memorial Award at Carolina. She also served as Captain of the Women’s Cross Country team, and won individual titles at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships four times, and was named All-American three times in Cross Country and Track and Field.
In 2003, Dr. Nazarian graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. While completing her internship and residency in General Surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, she completed a PhD in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Nazarian completed a fellowship in Abdominal Transplantation at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (2011-2013) and a fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania (2019-2020).
In August 2020, Dr. Nazarian joined the faculty of Thomas Jefferson University as an Associate Professor of Surgery. Dr. Nazarian is the Immediate Past President of the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She also serves as a longstanding examiner for the American Board of Surgery General Surgery Certifying Examination.
