Students have a variety options for completing their Bachelor or Master of Science. Each program is offered in three specialty area majors:

Options for High School Seniors
Program Length
3 years pre-professional coursework at East Falls campus (full-time)
2 years professional coursework at Center City campus (full-time)
About the Program
Students will complete a minimum of 99 credits of pre-professional coursework in the first three years of study on the East Falls campus. These fulfill all necessary professional program prerequisite coursework.
Students who interview and maintain progression criteria are guaranteed to matriculate into the professional phase. Jefferson’s academic advisors and faculty work closely with our students on course selection and academic performance to ensure that each student is on pace to transition into the professional phase of the program.
Options for College Students
Bachelor of Science, Two-Year Option
Program Length
2 prior years of specific prerequisite coursework (55 credits)
2 academic years (full-time)
About the Program
This is the traditional track for students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science. Students enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing prerequisite coursework at another school.
Bachelor of Science, One-Year Option
Program Length
3 prior years of specific prerequisite coursework (70 credits)
1 year (12 consecutive months, full-time)
About the Program
Students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science can enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing prerequisite coursework at another school.
The one-year option allows students with three prior years of specific prerequisite coursework to earn a BS in one calendar year of full-time study.
Bachelor of Science & Master of Science

2 academic years (full-time)

Students seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science can enter Thomas Jefferson University for upper-division study after completing prerequisite coursework at another school.
The combined BS/MS option allows students with three prior years of specific prerequisite coursework to earn a BS and MS in two calendar years of full-time study.
Master of Science, One-Year Option
Program Length
12 consecutive months of full-time study, including summer sessions

This one-of-a-kind program offers specific technical and managerial competencies for employment in the fields of biotechnology, cytotechnology, or medical laboratory science. This option is designed for students who:
- Have a BS in a field other than biotechnology, cytotechnology, or medical laboratory science/medical technology
- Have a BS in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology, or Medical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology, but want to study a different field
This option is a good fit for those who plan to apply to medical or other doctoral programs and want to gain additional academic and practical experience.
Master of Science, Two-Year Option
Program Length
2 years, with coursework in the fall and spring semesters and summers off.

Advanced Master of Science, One-Year and Two-Year Options
Program Length
Two-Year Option: part-time (5 semesters over two years)
One-Year Option: full-time (2 semesters)
About the Program
Students seeking leadership positions in laboratory management, education, or research can earn a Master of Science in Biotechnology, Cytotechnology and Cell Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science, through either full- or part-time study. This program is tailored to each student's unique interests and professional goals.
Students must have a BS or a post-baccalaureate certificate in biotechnology, cytotechnology, or medical laboratory science/medical technology. Cytotechnology applicants must be ASCP certified. Other laboratory professionals may be eligible based on training and experience.
