Meet Our Student: Auriel Lewis

Auriel is currently in her fifth year of the Bachelor of Architecture program, and recently received the American Institute of Architects Pennsylvania 2023 Architectural Excellence Student Award.

What are you studying at Jefferson?

I will graduate with a Bachelors of Architecture and a custom minor in Human Behavior, Perception and the Built Environment.

Why did you choose Jefferson?

I chose Jefferson because of its accredited architecture program, as well as the program's balance of conceptual and technical learning. The flexibility to explore other design areas, such as interior architecture, through collaborative studios was also a benefit I valued. Jefferson’s proximity to Center City and the opportunities the city presents as well were a factor that played into my decision.

Where are you from originally?

Maryland.

What is the best part of your studies?

The best part of my studies is the exposure I get to different community groups for our design projects, and discussing how to intentionally integrate the community into the design. Additionally, studying abroad has been one of my most memorable experiences because I was able to see in person many of the buildings I had read and learned about in class which was a great full-circle moment.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?

I love painting and crafting, and even opened up an Etsy shop for a little bit.

Tell us about a project you’re working on or award/honor you’ve recently received:

I was recently awarded the American Institute of Architects Pennsylvania 2023 Architectural Excellence Student Award. The award recognizes a graduating student who has shown exceptional academic achievement and design skills. This award means a lot to me as a culminating achievement of my work and academic career throughout these five years.

Going into college I had high expectations of myself and have pushed myself to step up into leadership opportunities, while also pushing my design skills and aiming for high academics overall. I joined the Jefferson chapter of AIAS during my freshman year, this allowed me to witness the support of the organization, industry professionals, and upper-year students through their mentorship. Through these interactions, I was inspired to get more involved and lean into the design community.

I also am a member of the National Organization of Minority of Architecture students and served as the 2021-2022 president of Jefferson’s NOMAS chapter and now, as a fifth-year student, serve as an upper-year mentor. Additionally, I serve as the student representative on the lecture series committee where I have been able to interact with and introduce award-winning and nationally acclaimed industry leaders.

In my experience with AIAS, NOMAS, and the lecture series committee I have been exposed to other inspiring designers, professionals, and talented students with whom I have learned from, have been mentored by, and who have pushed me forward to reach my full potential.

Overall, this award to me is a great honor and testament to the work I’ve put in over these five years and all of the opportunities that have had a great impact on my personal and professional growth. I am deeply grateful for the recognition and it serves as both validation and inspiration to continue striving for excellence in my pursuits.
