After more than 35 years at Jefferson, Dr. Edward Winter has retired as of Fall 2025. Dr. Winter began his career with undergraduate training at Bard College and PhD training at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After completing fellowship research at SUNY Stony Brook and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he joined the Jefferson faculty in 1990, where he remained an active scientist and professor for over three decades.
Dr. Winter’s research career has had a broad impact on our understanding of meiotic development and signal transduction. Specifically, his work focused on the molecular mechanisms and non-canonical MAPK signaling pathways that dictate spore formation and cell-cycle progression in yeast. His discoveries have important implications for our fundamental understanding of genetics and developmental biology. Many of his publications have appeared in prestigious, high-impact journals, including Science, PNAS, and The EMBO Journal.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Winter has made vital contributions to graduate education at Jefferson. He served in key leadership roles, including Director of the PhD training program in Biochemistry, Structural and Molecular Biology, and has mentored numerous PhD students and MS students through their thesis research.
