Research & Clinical Interests

Dr. Calderon joined Jefferson in April 2025 from the Icahn School of Medicine and the Mount Sinai Health System, where she served as the Dean and Vice President for Equity in Clinical Care and a tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine, as well as Chair of the David B. Kriser Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel.

Dr. Calderon is known for her clinical research, focused on HIV and Hepatitis C, major health disparities which are prominent in historically minoritized communities.

She is renowned for her lifelong commitment to providing care to patients who are most impacted by structural racism and finding solutions to address disparate medical care and outcomes.

Accomplishments & honors

  • Elected member of the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of her outstanding contributions incorporating public health and primary care interventions in the emergency department for communities which are under-represented in medicine.  
  • Developed the first multimedia-based HIV testing and counseling program that provides testing in the ED, inpatient, dental and community pharmacies.
  • Designed and implemented screening programs to identify patients with undiagnosed HIV and hepatitis C virus and successfully connected these patients to care.
  • Member of the American Board of Emergency Medicine Board of Directors since 2019, she has led many of their health equity initiatives.
  • Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH Legacy Award from the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine’s Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine, in recognition of her sustained commitment to the principles of justice and health equity through scholarship, mentorship and leadership. (First physician at Mount Sinai to receive this honor.)
  • Built a robust faculty development initiative at Mount Sinai to foster academic success and advancement.
