Romantic Disillusion by Faith Higgins

Romantic Disillusion

Loosely based off 1950-60s Romance Magazine, which contained issues of fiction romance stories for young girls. This piece addresses this false idea of what romance truly is, and the unfulfilled expectations young woman have going into a relationship. We don’t want flowers, we want mutual respect, kindness, and friendship in a partner. This piece also contains hidden details such as princess Diana’s ring, a symbol of commitment turned to cheating, a very real reality of today’s dating climate. The classic Chanel pearl necklace, a nod to Coco Chanel but also to the traditional housewife role women are expected to take on in a relationship. The gloves, who’s purpose back in the 50s were not just to look fancy, but to hide any sign of working hands.
