End-of-Year Donation Drive Collects Over 1,000 Pounds of Items

Students donated nonperishable food, clothing, and household and personal care products.

With the help of resident assistants and students in the community service work-study program, Jefferson collected 1,018 pounds of items to donate to the Philly Unknown Project and Philly Food Rescue. Through the University’s annual end-of-year donation drive, Jefferson students prevented over half a ton of items from heading to area landfills.

The Office of Student Engagement (OSE) and Office of Residential Life (ORL) set up donation boxes around Jefferson’s East Falls Campus as the spring semester wound down and students began to pack up for the summer.

Nearly 850 articles of clothing and household and personal care items, weighing 882 pounds, went to the Philly Unknown Project. The local nonprofit provides vulnerable communities with resources through outreach and advocacy.

Students also donated 134 nonperishable food items, weighing 136 pounds, to Philly Food Rescue, a sustainability and food recovery and donations project of Share Food Program.

“This drive wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the resident assistants and the students in the community service work-study program,” says Kaed Rende, assistant director of student engagement for community service. “Through this program, OSE and ORL seek to promote collaboration and sustainability, as well as expand our community impact.”
