Jefferson Launches Four Innovative Programs to Prepare Students for Careers of the Future

They focus on the intersections of AI, health data and analytics.

To address the demands of the evolving job market, Thomas Jefferson University launched four new programs to equip students with critical skills for the future. These offerings emphasize artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, aligning with the University’s commitment to leading in modern education.

“AI and technology will have a transformative role in enhancing learning, research and operational efficiencies within the University,” says Jefferson President Dr. Susan Aldridge. “Once we can build the infrastructure and demonstrate our knowledge, capabilities and skill sets, we can start answering questions with our own data, which is where the University will greatly benefit.”

Here’s what to know about each of the new programs:

  • MS in Business Analytics
  • MS in Data Analytics

These two programs give students a solid foundation in modeling, predictive analytics, machine learning and data-driven decision-making, with a few key differences in curriculum.

For example, the MS in Business Analytics focuses on integrating analytics into business plans.

“This program is geared toward students who want to make the complex world of data accessible to leadership,” says Justin O’Pella, assistant dean for academic administration at the Kanbar College of Design, Engineering & Commerce. “Students will gain a strong foundation in data storytelling, specializing in presenting insights to non-technical audiences.”

In contrast, the MS in Data Analytics targets those eager to delve deeper into the technical world of data. “This program is designed for students who wish to explore advanced data analytics techniques,” O’Pella explains. “It appeals to students with a strong interest in understanding algorithms and machine learning at a more granular level. It’s perfect for those who enjoy the technical aspects of data.”

These programs will benefit students looking to gain a competitive advantage in their industries by bringing insight to leaders, making informed decisions and leading teams effectively.

“They’re perfect for people who excel in working with data—whether you’re already in the workforce, changing careers or completing your undergraduate degree,” he says.

  • MS in Computational Biology & Medicine

This program bridges the gap between biology, medicine and computational science. The interdisciplinary degree leverages computational techniques to analyze biological data, understand complex biological systems and improve patient outcomes.

“Students will gain a robust foundation in key areas, such as bioinformatics, systems biology and machine learning applications in healthcare,” says Program Director Dr. Eric Londin. “They will learn to analyze large datasets, develop algorithms and create models that can lead to breakthroughs in medical research and patient care.”

The program is ideal for people with a background in biological sciences, computer science or related fields who are seeking to enhance their skills in computational methods, he says. It caters to recent graduates looking to specialize and professionals aiming to transition into this rapidly evolving field.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health Analytics Leadership Advanced Practice Certificate (APC)

The advanced practice certificate targets working professionals and those entering the field of health informatics. It consists of three courses that guide students through the complexities of health data, from ethical considerations to building AI models, says Program Director Dr. Richard Hass, noting students will gain practical skills in managing health data while navigating the ethical implications of its use.

“This program is built for people to get their feet wet working with health data, whether you’re a student coming out of clinical research or a practitioner wanting to get out of the clinic and move up to the executive level,” Dr. Hass says.

The certificate is also stackable. After completing the three courses, students can take two more for a full certificate or eight more for an MS in Health Data Science.

Why Launch These Programs Now?

As the landscape of work continues to evolve with technological advancements, Jefferson is steadfast in its mission to ensure that students remain at the forefront, Dr. Aldridge says. Launching these programs is a response to the swift evolution of job requirements in the tech and analytics sectors.

“This field is experiencing rapid growth, meaning a higher demand for specialized skills,” she says. “Our programs emphasize technical expertise and ethical considerations, quality control and leadership skills concerning data management.”

Thomas Jefferson University is committed to preparing students for the jobs of the future by emphasizing applied learning experiences, ethics and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Aldridge says. “In working on projects, students from various backgrounds will collaborate with peers and professors who have direct industry experiences, bringing different perspectives to real-world challenges.”
