Meet Our Student: Jim Sontag

Jim is currently in the Accelerated Dual Bachelor of Architecture and MS in Historic Preservation program.

Where are you from originally?

I am originally from Horsham, Pa., however I grew up in East Norriton, Pa.

Why did you choose Jefferson?

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to explore Historic Preservation in addition to architecture, so when I saw Jefferson offered a dual degree to earn an MS in Historic Preservation it just made sense. The campus being in East Falls also influenced my decision as it is a part of the city that I hold close to my heart.

What is the best part of your studies?

For me, the best part of studying at Jefferson is working with extremely knowledgeable instructors on projects based on real sites throughout the city of Philadelphia. My instructors have encouraged me to push myself and create projects I can be proud of.

What are the benefits of taking part in a dual degree program?

The benefits of taking part in a dual degree program are immense. I have been able to get a jump start on my MS in Historic Preservation by taking one extra course each semester during the last two years of my Bachelor of Architecure degree. Not only does this give me an early start on my MS degree, but it has also allowed for a unique experience in my pursuit of architecture.

Taking Historic Preservation courses has helped deepen my understanding and appreciation of architecture and has helped influence how I approach design. It has also provided me with amazing opportunities I might not have had before, such as visiting historic sites that are not typically open to the public.

Why should undergraduate students consider a dual degree program?

It is a great way to expose yourself to new experiences and to push yourself to explore opportunities you might not get otherwise. It is also extremely beneficial to save both time and money on your education, while also challenging yourself to reach your greatest potential.

What are you working on now?

This semester I am very excited to work on the architectural documentation of St. Stephen’s Methodist Episcopal Church in Germantown. We will be following the standards put forth by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) to document the site through drawings, photographs and other visual means.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?

I used to be a sous chef and have worked under some of the best chefs at some of the top restaurants in Philadelphia.
