Meet Our Student: Olivia Dec

Olivia is currently in the Accelerated Dual Bachelor of Architecture and MS in Historic Preservation program, now taking classes at the graduate level.

Where are you from originally?

Freehold, New Jersey.

What are you studying at Jefferson?

MS in Historic Preservation

Why did you choose Jefferson?

I chose Jefferson because of the type of community the college has to offer and the variety of programs that relate to Architecture and Architectural Studies. With the close communication you have with professors and opportunities to work as a team with the rest of the class, you gain early experience on what it is like to work on any project with a variety of circumstances.

What is the best part of your studies?

The best part of my studies is working in those teams, coming up with compromises and gathering data on sites we survey during class. Having a hands-on experience in the field and having an opportunity to work with neighborhoods or collaborating with property owners always give us as students new challenges to face that aren’t always accessible in a classroom.

What are the benefits of taking part in a dual degree program?

The benefits I see in taking part in a dual degree program is the broader range of skills and knowledge you leave with and the specialization you can have in your field, which can increase your employability.

Why should undergraduate students consider a dual degree program?

Although the undergraduate programs in the College of Architecture & the Built Environment (CABE) are extremely thorough in gaining knowledge of our desired future fields, gaining a second degree gives you an opportunity to stand out in a crowd when applying for jobs. Having a different perspective and a broader education can prepare you for the ability to adapt and contribute valuable input.

What are you working on now?

A current project I am working on for the university is a photography exhibit that was part of the DesignPhiladelphia events this fall. This exhibit showcases students’ works from the previous semester, as well as additional works of cyanotype, and gelatin silver prints being prepared by me. I did a demonstration on cyanotypes at the event and oversaw setting up the space to be ready for guests.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?

Something that people would find surprising about me is my knowledge on photography and the history of the uses, technology and different techniques.
