Professor Saglinda Roberts Publishes Second Edition of Sustainable Design for the Built Environment

The College of Architecture & the Built Environment is proud to announce that Associate Professor Saglinda Roberts has released of the second edition of her influential textbook, Sustainable Design for the Built Environment, which she co-authored with former Jefferson professors Rob Fleming and Chitsanzo Isaac.

The book reflects the evolution of sustainable design from a specialized service to a mainstream practice that is shaping the future of architecture and the built environment. Written in a clear, accessible style, the text introduces students and practitioners alike to a holistic approach which goes beyond performance-driven goals to consider social, cultural, ecological, and aesthetic considerations. Offering suggested readings and classroom assignments within the textbook, the latest edition provides students with the tools necessary to envision a regenerative, coevolutionary model where human activity and natural processes thrive together.

Roberts brings more than 30 years of professional design experience to her teaching and research. An award-winning designer, she has earned recognition from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and other organizations, and her work has been widely published and presented at international forums. At Jefferson, she teaches in the MS in Sustainable Design program, where her research explores the future of integral sustainable design and its real-world application.

Sustainable Design for the Built Environment is not just a textbook,” Roberts said. “It’s about rethinking the way we design for a future where buildings, communities, and ecosystems work in harmony.”
