Meet Dr. Eduardo Smith Singares

Eduardo Smith Singares, MD, MS-PopH, FACHE, FACS, FCCM, KM, is a recent graduate of the Master of Science in Population Health program. He's originally from Panama and resides in Richland, Washington.

Why did you choose Jefferson?
Jefferson College of Population Health (JCPH)  was my first choice. The strong emphasis on health services management and community-based health initiatives aligned perfectly with my career interests. The format is perfect for busy professionals, allows unparalleled flexibility, and maximizes value.

What was it about the Master of Science in Population Health program that interested you?
My professional network highly recommended the program, including the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL). The AAPL collaboration clinched it for me, as it maximized my return-on-investment (ROI), while avoiding compromising my educational and professional objectives.

What was the best part of your studies?
Both learning new things and expanding my professional network.

What is your current role?
Professor of Surgery at Washington State University College of Medicine.

Tell us about a project or research you've worked on.
For my capstone, I devised a modeling tool for Health Equity measurement, that allows tracking of performance efficiency for health systems. I’ve also completed implementation science and quality improvement/operational change initiatives, including DVT Chemoprophylaxis on traumatic brain injury patients and a pilot on pharmacist-managed transitions of care for trauma patients. I had the opportunity to present and publish this work in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.

Describe any recognitions or awards.
2024 Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) Western States Scholarship
2025 United Health Foundation Scholarship
2026 Eakins Scholarship (JCPH)

Share advice for prospective students pursuing a degree in your fields.
Clarify your goals.  Whether it is career advancement, entering additional professional networks, or correcting knowledge gaps, ensure the value you expect from your investment offsets the costs of graduate education. Next, carefully research institutions, not just based on reputation or advertising, but in return-on-investment terms.  A program such as Jefferson’s, which provides a world-class education under the guidance of distinguished faculty, offers greater marginal value than similar programs at globally renowned institutions, particularly in light of the principle of diminishing marginal returns.

I would also add, that its important to be open to suggestions and learn how to provide care and support for variety of people and communities.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?
I found out through DNA testing that I descend from Rees Prees, from Llanfihangel Nant Melan, Radnorshire, Wales (and allegedly a descendent from Rhys ap Thomas, of Bossworth Fields fame) in the male line. So fighting tyranny and changing the world is in my blood!
