Neurocritical Care

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a 926 bed tertiary referral  medical center with a 14-bed Neurosensory Intensive Care Unit and a 20 bed intermediate NICU. 

Jefferson Hospital for the Neurosciences, dedicated for the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery along with the Farber Institute for Neurosciences, has a 28-bed Neuro-intensive Care Unit.  This provides a total of 52 neurointensive care beds and 14 separate Acute Stroke Unit beds within the Jefferson University System.  Jefferson is a major referral center for stroke and critically ill neurology and neurosurgery patients for tri-state area.

Our program has one of the largest Neurocritical Care Unit in the country.  Jefferson Neurosurgery and Endovascular Neuroradiology Program treats the highest volume of patients with intracranial aneurysms, brain AVMs, and occlusive carotid disease in the nation.  In this environment, residents and stroke fellows, and NICU fellows learn to become leaders in the academic field of stroke and neurocritical care.  NICU fellows supervise both neurology and neurosurgery residents in the unit and lead the team in daily patient care.  This occurs under the direct supervision of the four stroke and neurocritical care attending on staff in this division.

The Neurocritical Care program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital provides a multidisciplinary approach to caring for the critical patient whose neurological diseases may include intracranial vcascular malformation, intracranial tumor, stroke or intracranial stenosis requiring intrarterial thrombolysis, intracerebral hemorrhage, spinal cord injury, CNS vasculitis, acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, status epilepticus, myasthenia gravis, brain abscess, and encephalitis.

The Gibbon Building Neurosensory Intensive Care Unit is a 14 bed unit staffed by a neuro-intensivist in cooperation with Neurosurgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics.  The JHN Neuro-intensive Care Unit (located two blocks from Gibbon) is a 10 bed unit and a 16 bed unit, both specializing in the care of critical patients with various cerebrovascular abnormalities.  This unit is staffed by a neuro-intensivist in close cooperation with Neurosurgery.
